When you are in Malaysia and you don't visit this hill station, then your trip to Malaysia doesn't even count! Filled with truly serene mountains, ancient temples, gondolas (chair lifts), casinos, and theme parks, this place is a complete package.
It has everything for everyone. People of every age group have "To-DOs" in Genting Highland hill station. In this blog, I will share with you my experience of visiting this place. It may help you to plan a better trip.
Going to Genting Highlands:
It was the first EID that came right after the 1st Covid-19 wave had ended. The situation started to seem under control. At that time, people like me assumed that the "Covid thing" has finally gone and it won't return. I was wrong though.
So, people were quite overwhelmed traveling out of their homes after being stuck in one place, probably for the first time (now it's usually normal). Accompanied by my parents, uncle, auntie, and the kids, the journey started after taking a bus from "KUALA LUMPUR SENTRAL". We had to go through all the covid protocols, just an airport.
It was a 60-minute journey. As the hilly areas approached, i started to feel the pressure, like, breathing became a bit hard. It's just a minor change, so no worries. There was notable drop in the temperature.
Arriving in Genting Highlands:
One-hour journey felt like a blink of an eye. From the Bus station in Genting Highland, we took a Gondola (chair lift) taking us to the Buddhist Temple, "Chinswee Temple", which is located 4,600 meters above sea level.
It was my first time in Gondola (chair lift). Being afraid of heights, I was freaking out. But, I got motivated by Abdullah, a 4-year old kid of my uncle in the same chair lift who was excited, carefree, without any concern about heights because he was just making every moment count! That's how you should be traveling.
Chinswee Temple:
This Buddhist temple is free to explore. You can click on some amazing photos out there. But, the food you may find at this place could be quite expensive. You may also come across some Buddist pilgrims here performing their religious rituals, so be sure you don't bother them!
Interestingly, this place has a passage that takes you to the top of this hill. The passage is surrounded by the depiction of Buddist rulers and their courts. It is represented in the form of exhibition. As I started watching these models, I slowly moved up the hill without realizing my parents were on the other side.
Due to the poor internet connection, we couldn't contact either. Anyhow, after 30 minutes, I found my parents. They indeed scolded me and asked to get a grip!
Genting Highland Resort World:
Then we took another Gondola (chair lift). It would take us to the "Resort World". This time around, the Gondola (chair lift) suddenly stopped. We were hanging in the air, without any clue of when this machine would start moving again.
It was quite terrifying as I could see tiny cars moving on the ground. Thoughts like, "what would happen if we fall" were all over my mind. After a minute or two, it started moving and felt back to life again. The first thing we did after reaching the Resort World was that we straight away refunded our tickets, which we had bought for the return journey via Gondola. If you are afraid of heights, on a serious note, don't take such rides.
Resort World has theme parks, shopping malls, and casinos. We ONLY visited the shopping mall, theme park. There were some cool rides that the kids took. Since I'm no longer a kid, I simply roamed here and there and captured images for my INSTA feed. This place is certainly decent for aesthetic pictures.
Going back:
After spending this day well, on the journey back home, we missed your bus and it was the last one too. Looking for the options like GRAB (Malaysian version of UBER), they were not available. We waited for 2 hours at the bus station and midnight was about to click.
We neither found GRAB nor any other alternative bus. Eventually, one local taxi driver accepted a private ride. But as per the covid protocols, 5 people were allowed per SUV and we were 6. The journey seemed a never-ending haunted roller-coaster without any end.
After waiting for one more hour, we found another taxi. So, half of us were in one cab and half in the other.
Verdict:
Finally, reaching home for the ever first time felt that much wonderful due to the dodgy journey. It was filled with the up-downs, excitement, and fear. Nonetheless, Genting Highland is a fabulous tourist spot. And, the unexpected moments like getting lost for a while, being stuck in the air, or missing the bus, all these parts made this journey an unforgettable one for me.
